COVID-19

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that may cause illness in animals or humans. In humans, several coronaviruses are known to cause respiratory infections ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases. COVID-19 is the infectious disease caused by the most recently discovered coronavirus (“CO” stands for corona; “VI” for virus; “19” the year in which it appeared). This new virus and disease were unknown before the outbreak began in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. The main symptoms of COVID-19 are Fever, Coughing, Shortness of breath, trouble breathing, Fatigue, Chills, sometimes shaking, Body aches, Headache, Sore throat, Congestion/runny nose, loss of smell or taste, Nausea, Diarrhea. In more severe cases, the infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome and even death. While we are still learning about how COVID-2019 affects people, older persons and persons with per-existing medical conditions (such as high blood pressure, heart disease, lung disease, cancer or diabetes) appear to develop serious illness more often than others. Throughout the pandemic, scientists have kept a close eye on variants like Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Omicron, Lambda, Mu. There's no way to tell how long the pandemic will continue. There are many factors, including the public's efforts to slow the spread, researchers' work to learn more about the virus, their search for a treatment, and the success of the vaccines.
